Collection: October 2024 Tabletalk
The October 2024 issue of Tabletalk will address the theme of biblical interpretation under the heading of “by good and necessary consequence.” Westminster Confession of Faith 1.6 tells us that “the whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man’s salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture.” The meaning of Scripture is found both in what it says explicitly and in what may be necessarily implied in and deduced from the biblical text. In our day, many Christians misunderstand this, thinking that proving a position from Scripture requires merely restating the text or otherwise failing to explain it or to relate it to other passages that deal with the same subject. This issue of Tabletalk will aim to help Christians properly read, interpret, and apply God’s Word accurately by looking at how we receive the teaching of Scripture through both what it says directly and what may be necessarily deduced from it.
